Advanced Maternal Age

Well, as of yesterday, I am now a member of the dreaded AMA category.  Yep, I turned 35.  I know in real life, 35 is not really that old.  But in the life of an infertile 35 is ancient.  35 means I can be referred to a specialist.  35 means that I get special attention from the doc.  35 means that I get extra ultrasounds.  But 35 also means that my chances of getting pregnant just decreased significantly.  35 means that my chances of having a child with delays or disabilities increased significantly.  Lots to look foward too, huh?

  1. Happy Birthday! I am 39, turning 40 this year, and still trying for my first (been trying 2 years), so 35 is still plenty young! :-)

  2. Happy Birthday! I wish we could enjoy them the way we did when we were younger and didn't have these cares and stresses like today. Hope you had a great birthday though - and an extra large piece of chocolate cake!

  3. I'm there with ya on the advanced age. I promised him a year of being by ourselves before we start trying but my new insurance said I would have to have maternity insurance a year before they would pay anything. So now it's December before we can try. That reminds me, I need to call the insurance company to see if that can change. Do I stress about the all you mentioned? YES

  6. They don't care how old you are! Our big insurance thing right now is that they won't pay for in vitro unless you've been trying for 2 years (uh, hello? we don't have an extra 2 years to waste!) or there is a medical reason you aren't getting pregnant. Really? I mean, what other reason is there? It's a mental block maybe?

  7. Don't worry about the 35 thing... I was in exactly the same boat as you - on cycle 3 of Clomid and turned 35 - when 3 months later, after a hysteroscopy / lap & dye and my sixth round of Clomid, I got pregnant. I now have the most gorgeous one year old girl. And I am going through the whole thing again for number two at 37! Another hysteroscopy/ lap & dye is scheduled for 5th April but this time I know that it can work and that it is all soooooo worth it. Hang in there. Oh and in terms of IVF you are still really young!
